How to build an email list! The money is in the list!

I know I tell you to pay attention a lot, but today, please listen to me.  I am going to teach you:  How to build an email list!  When people say, “The money is in the list,” it’s true.   It’s one of the most important functions you will perform if you are looking to make money online.  Therefore, pay attention!

If you're not you're leaving money on the table!

How to build an email list

Why do I need an email list?

I’m sure you’ve heard it said that it takes the normal person seeing something a minimum of seven times before they will purchase something.  That is something you need to wrap your head around, especially if you are affiliate marketing on your website.

What do you think the chances are that you will get your readers back to your page seven or more times without any assistance?  It is probably not going to happen.  Sorry.  I’m just being truthful.  A person would have to type in your keyword each time, your website would have to display on page 1 of the results, and that person would have to click on your link.  Wow, that’s a lot of chance.

Let’s not leave it to chance.  Let’s plan, instead.  That’s a much better way to do business.  Affiliate marketing is not a difficult business, but in the beginning, when you are building your website content and setting up your affiliate products and links, it can be time-consuming.  I have to believe that you are doing all this to make money, and I’ve set up this website to help you do that.  Make money.

Email marketing keeps you top of mind with your readers.  When you can capture the email address of your readers, you then have the opportunity to show them value in you, and your site, and eventually your products or services!  Notice that I said “show them value.”  That is your top job in email marketing, with product promotion being last.

How to build an email list

How do I get subscribers?

In order to obtain someone’s email, you need to give a person a reason to give it to you.  I’ve never seen a form that said, “Hey, can I have your email?  Sign up here!”  LOL!  No, that’s not quite how it works.

The way you get an email address from your reader is by offering your reader something of value that you will email to them.  You can offer to send them information.  You can offer to put them on a subscription list to receive notifications.  You can offer them a free Ebook.

People love free information if it’s presented in a way that it sounds enticing.  It’s really all about the presentation.  You need to think about your readers.  What information would they really want?  How can you help them?  Helping other people, no matter what your niche, will bring you much success!

Zig Ziglar has a very famous saying.  It goes like this:

“You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.”

What do I email to the list?

This is the million dollar question.  Let me tell you why.  You can entice your reader to give you their email address, and you can send them your ebook, or subscribe them to your list, but your reader can, at any time, unsubscribe from your list, and then you are back to zero.

You want to keep your subscribers on your list, receiving your information, opening your emails.  Correct?  That is how you keep on their mind and get them to come back to your website or offer.  That is the end game.

So how do we keep them?  We keep them by sending them quality content and not constantly trying to get them to buy something.  Nobody wants to constantly be sold to.  I can’t stand when all I get are emails trying to sell me something.  I want to receive quality information.  I want information that will help me accomplish my own personal goals.

You want to help people, just like the quote from Zig Ziglar above states.  Help other people get what they want.

Let’s go over the process!

Follow steps!

  • Create a sign-up form offering something of value
  • Send the email with a link to the offer
  • Wait a day.......
  • Send another email asking them how they liked the offer, and asking do they have any questions about whatever it is you sent them! Tell them a personal story about yourself connecting to the offer. REMEMBER: Always suppy a link to your website in every email!
  • Wait a couple of days.......
  • Send another email with some more information relating to the offer. When you send out the first offer, make sure you hold back on this information so it will be relevant and important to the reader. You do NOT want to sell them anything, simply provide information. REMEMBER: Always supply a link to your website in every email!
  • Wait a few days......
  • Send another email with a wonderful offer in it. It should relate to the original offer, showing them another benefit of whatever your offer was. Educate and offer!

Sounds like a lot of work?

It does, indeed, sound time-consuming, but nothing could be further from the truth.  All of this “work” is done only one time, and then it will run completely on auto-pilot!

How is this accomplished?  It’s done with an email marketing service called AWeber, and inside their platform, you set up what’s called a “campaign.”  Let me show you how this works!  It’s not difficult, and what’s nice is that inside the platform, they have instructional tutorials you can refer to if you want to learn how to do a task!

It’s a very inexpensive program, as well, compared to some of the other ones out there, and it has more function than a lot of the other ones as well.  I have taken training through several platforms for my affiliate marketing business, and AWeber is what is typically recommended for email marketing!

Here’s an article I wrote about the AWeber Email program:

What's with AWeber

This article will give you an overview of the program, and it will also offer you a free trial!! Take a look:

You can add text and pictures, etc. to customize your sign-up form, so don’t worry if you don’t like exactly how it look or if it doesn’t state your whole message or intent:

how to build an email form

After you get your sign-up form the exact way you like it, you need to identify the people who subscribe.  You do this by giving them a specific “tag” that you choose.  You will need this tag later when you tell the system what to do with people who have this particular tag.

This will differentiate your groups of subscribers!

Choose a tag or tags to apply to people when they complete this particular form

How to build an email list

In this next step, you will direct the people who sign up and hit enter to a thank you page.  The system has a “default” page, but I always direct them back to my website to a specific page I’ve set up.

Choose what page they will be directed to after they hit the submit button on your form

Here is an example of a simple thank you page that I set up on my website for one of my sign-up forms:

Now we have the email address...

Once they have subscribed, we are now in possession of the person’s name and email address!  Yay!  That is just the very first part of the process.  This person always has the option to unsubscribe from our emails, so we need to work our marketing magic to keep them interested and subscribed to us!

I talked to you a little bit about the types of emails you want to send.  These are just guidelines.  You have to follow your own process within your niche.  If you want to see what other people are doing, visit a few websites in your niche and subscribe to their site or sign up for their free giveaway.  You’ll be able to then see what other people are sending out and how often.

Myself, I don’t like getting “spammed,” and I will very quickly unsubscribe if I see too many emails coming in from one person or company.  I just don’t have time to deal with that, and it can actually give me anxiety.  Therefore, I set my schedule to my readers according to my own personal preference.  Do the same!

How to set up a campaign

As I discussed above, when someone signs up on your form, you set up the form to apply a “tag” to the person.  The tag you apply is what you set as the trigger for the campaign.  In other words, you set the campaign to start the email process with specific emails to anyone who has that tag.

Once the tag is applied, you will be given options to send an email or wait for a specified period of time.  You simply drag your choice over to the campaign.

Once you drag your email, you open it up and create each email.

You just click the “Create a Message” tab and write your email.  You can put links, photos, etc. in each email.  You then go to your campaign, slide over the “Wait” action and tell the system how long to wait.  Then you drag another “Send a Message” action and create your next message.  That’s it!

It’s really that simple!

Get that list!

You can make your own squeeze pages.  Put information on a page, put your sign-up form on the page, and then post the link to that page all over your social media accounts.

They’re called “Squeeze” pages because they are designed to “squeeze” a person’s  name and email address out of them.  It sounds kind of crude, I know, but that is what they are designed to do.

Squeeze pages should be brief and enticing.  You can buy templates of squeeze pages, but I like original content, and I always suggest you create your own.  If you do use a template, be sure it is customizable so you can make it your own.

Here’s a typical Squeeze Page:

Do you see how simple that is?  It’s got a great picture a gardener would love.  Look at the headline and the simple text, “Learn how to turn your backyard into the most delicious grocery store on the block!”  Oooh, now that is music to the ears of any gardener!

Putting your forms on your website

Putting your sign up forms on your website is super easy.  Once a form is complete, you are given the html code to place on a post, on a page or on the sidebar widget.  It is so easy to do, and remember, there is full support on the AWeber platform if you ever have any questions:

Born in Texas, raised in upstate New York, I have been marketing for my entire adult life.I have decided to share all the information I have gathered on what works in affiliate marketing, and what doesn't because I want to let the world know that working online gives you the freedom to work from anywhere, and that is exactly what I do!

Starting out can be tough, I know, so I will also be sharing lots of free resources to get you going.I am dedicated to providing this information to my readers, and I hope you always feel free to reach out to me.

Thanks for visiting my page!

  1. I agree with the importance of email marketing and the high value of having a responsive list in your specific niche.  Planning is indeed the way to maximize one’s efforts.  A well planned email marketing campaign will be effective in reaching and converting buyers in your niche.

Value to our customers does come first and discovering what they actually need to solve their problems.  Once that is discovered a proper solution can be presented.

You did a great job in explaining the proper way to attract people to your email list.  Quality content is so important with a few product promotions here and there sent in a timely way.  You have provided much valuable info on managing campaigns with an autoresponder such as Aweber.  Thanks for this valuable information.

  2. Hi Babs

You have a clear and concise manner explain what email marketing is and now I know how to set up a campaign. It does not sound as complicated as it sounds, as I assume that most people who start have no idea how to do this. . My only concern is that people are constantly bombarded with emails everyday, will they not get desensitized and ignore it after awhile. What about spam filters because after a while if you do not unsubscribe it ends up in the spam folder. How do you stop this?

    1. First, you tell them to check their spam folder and whitelist your email address.  Then you keep them interested with enticing titles for your emails.  Get them to open them!  ~ Babs

  3. After reading your article i have benefited greatly. You discuss in your article about How to build an email list. You also said  Why do need an email list, How do get subscribers, What do email to the list etc. That’s really awesome. After reading your article i have learned in this topics clearly.I think your article is helpful to all. So , Thank you very much for sharing your article.

  4. Hi Babs,

Your article just arrived at the right time as l am planning to start an email campaign for my blog. You have clearly laid out the steps to build an email list and what do l email to the list.

I have been thinking of using MailChimp but they don’t allow affiliate links. I have read your Aweber post and they have many great features. The one feature  I like most is the automation campaign which allows me to set up my email sequence and schedule them accordingly when the email will be sent out.

I will give a try and thank you.

    1. What you can do is send people to your website and then from there to your affiliate link.  I have a sign-up page for a lot of my affiliate programs so I don’t have a ton of affiliate links all over my site.  I direct them to my sign-up page and then that sends them to the affiliate program.  ~ Babs

  5. Wow!!! This is a very good article and very insightful. Thank you for taking the time to explain about email list. I am one of those people who thought build a list is a lot of work, but after you explained that yes it is but you only have to do it once made a lot of sense.

This statement you made on your article really stood out to me – When people say, “The money is in the list,” it’s true.   It’s one of the most important functions you will perform if you are looking to make money online.  Therefore, pay attention!

You are a very good writer and this blog has really challenged me to focus on my email list. Thank you

    1. Thank you, Pastor Dre!  I appreciate it.  I really do!  It’s great when I feel like I’ve helped people.  ~ Babs

  6. Awesome post and website Babs. Having built an email list of people who have requested to hear from you regarding your expertise is a huge money-making asset, as it is a fast way to get targeted traffic to your new offers from people who have already expressed interest in your brand. It is a good branding and relationship tool as well. Definitely a worthy goal.

    1. Thank you, Elaine!  You are so right, people who subscribe are already interested, so you are providing valuable information to them to help them.  ~ Babs

  7. Hey Babs,

This is an unique and informative article I must say. I did not know that building an email list is so much productive in this way and I was unaware of the advantages of it. But after reading your article I have come to know many informations about it. I am astonished that there are so many opportunities and we are leaving the money on the table by not paying enough attention to this. I liked that you have given tips on building email list and gaining subscribers moroever you have shared your own experience which is a great thing.

Thank you for sharing so much for.

    1. You’re welcome, Mahin!  I love sharing information that I come upon and teaching is my passion!  I’m glad you found good value from it!  ~ Babs

  8. Thank you for this great reminder of how email marketing can make a big difference to your business. I used to actually have an Aweber account, but didn’t use it as I should have and as often as I should have. One needs to be consistent when doing email marketing, otherwise, your list grows cold.

What better way to build your email list than by using your website. If your visitors like what they see on your website, they then should like what you have to send them, so the people that sign up onto your list are great potential customers.

The best part about using an autoresponder like Aweber is that you only need to do the follow-up sequence once and then the process can be automated.

    1. Yes, that’s the trick.  You need to take that time and set everything up, get those emails running, and then everyone who signs up gets your marketing!  ~ Babs

  9. Your infomation comes at a good point in my process.  I have created a website a little over a year ago, and almost feel like I have been pounded with people saying you need to sent up getting your readers email address.  I have been a bit hesistant, since I don’t fully understand it all and also because it seems with only being a year into it, I have so much I am trying to accomplish that I don’t have extra time to learn something new and get it up and running.

How long do you believe it takes to get an email program setup and running well?  If I spend 2 hours working on, do you believe I will be all set?

Also, to you have any other recommendations for email providers other than AWeber?  I am looking for something that doesn’t cost anything because at this point, my earnings are still rather low and there are other expenses associated with my website.  If there is a free program that works great that would be a bonus.  Can you start with one email program and than transfer over to a better program after you can afford it and not loose your email list?

Thanks for the information and your help.

    1. There are free email services, but I believe they are more limited than AWeber.  I have looked around, and this program gives me the functionality I need.  I believe Mailchimp is  a free one you can use up to 1,000 subscribers.  It will take you several hours to set everything up.  Take your time and make your sign-up form nice, and then write your emails and set them up.  I’d say probably 6 hours or so to get everything done.  ~ Babs

  10. Hi Babs, I really like your site.  I really want an email mechanism in my website, but until I read your post, I didn’t really know how to do it.  With the AWeber app, it looks really easy.  I had no idea that you could set up emailing with follow up emails, and everything.  I will book mark your post and look forward to more information from you.  Thanks for the great information!  RhondaLeigh

    1. Thank you for stopping by, RhondaLeigh, and thanks for taking the time to comment!  Yes, it is super easy and extremely important to set up email marketing!  ~ Babs

  11. I know when we are beginners in the online ventures, we dont grasp the importance of an email list. As I have continued to build my online business, I have come to understand this and I have started implementing . You have really put it into perspective on the chances of getting a reader into your website at least seven times. It is really a chance.

I love the idea of offering free value to readers. This is practical for them to want to receive the value and get the free stuff. The reminder on sending value other than wanting to sell all the time is on point.

This is a very insightful article. Thank you for taking your time to explain Email Lists

    1. My pleasure.  I am so glad you got value!  Implementing is key – I do it every time I research a new product or service or process I learn, I implement right away!  It’s the best way!  ~ Babs

  12. Hello , this is a very informative post. The thing is that  I have thought of doing email marketing but I always get scared of spamming. Maybe I’d be reported as being a spam. The wah you have explained this saying one should leave in a space isn’t bad at all and maybe I too can get my email list going. I saw a statistics that says that email marketing is one of the most thriving business on the internet now and this was what made me want to try it out. Thank you for a good information. I’ll give aweber a try. Do they offer automation?

    1. Yes, it’s all automated processes you set up to run in the background so you’re not individually sending out emails.  I wouldn’t worry about spamming if you don’t spam.  Send useful, helpful, informative emails, not too much sales stuff, just great information, and not too often, and you won’t be considered spam.  ~ Babs

  13. Hello Babs, gear article you have written up  here concerning email list. It is true that the money is in the list and getting it right would mean success quickly as an internet marketer. 14. Email marketing has grown to one of the most most used means of reaching out to people, I mean your customers and it is done by making a list, it’s this list that turns out to be the real deal here. This will relatively increase the number of visitors you have checking through your website by sending them notifications and information. This post will be of great help to Affiliate marketers, thanks for sharing.

  15. Good post Babs, I learned several new things especially that sample “timeline” list of email responses, good stuff! I hate to admit it, but I had never heard of Zig Ziglar before reading your post lol. I checked out his wiki page and sounds like he was pretty darn influential in the marketing and business worlds. I completely agree with you about emailing your list the way you would want to b emailed as I think we can all agree nobody likes spam and to feel like you are constantly being sent marketing emails with no actual value. Thanks Babs

    1. Well, I am so glad you researched Zig Ziglar.  You should watch some youtube of him – he is absolutely amazing and super famous!  ~ Babs

  16. Hello Babs, Over the years in the online business space, I have learnt that there are a lot to learn from email marketing. It has stood the test of time and anyone who treats it diligently will be successful at it. Your post here has given a carefully instructive way to do this using ones website. That is very nice. I like the fact that you have done this.

  17. Great guide on building an email list. I’ve been blogging for about 2 years now but never created an email list because I know how annoying those email pop ups can be and I didn’t want to frustrate my website visitors, but I’m now rethinking that maybe I should since it’s such a profitable business move. However I don’t have that much traffic and building a big list is going to take a long time, it would be great if I could just spend a little money and buy a list.

    1. I’m actually going to be moving to paid traffic soon myself.  I’ve been doing the organic thing, but I want to step it up a bit.  I’m following the Wealthy Affiliate training, and they’re just getting into the paid ads with Bing.  I’m excited!  ~ Babs

  18. Hi Babs. As always, you are one of the best coaches I have seen. I mean your posts are really interesting and fun to read through.

It is true that when we get hear about a particular item over and over again, we can easily develop interest to purchase it. Email marketing is just like a radio advertisement that keeps ringing in my head. Thanks for the guide. It’s helpful.

  19. This is a very good post that you have put out here and to be honest, I really like the fact you could give some explanations on how it all works. Building an email list has never been so easy before and I really like the fact that you could share with us some very interesting steps to make it work. I always wondered how one could make that pop up when one wants the website visitor to drop their email list. I didn’t know that it wasn’t so hard to do. Thanks!

  20. I have read alot about email marketing. I intend getting an email marketing service provider from the beginning when setting up my website. I was thinking about ConvertKit before now. Looks like Aweber is better??

I will start my website fully next year, just trying to get some money to put some stuff in order and to buy the software I need too. Thanks for sharing this step by step guide. 🙂

    1. I tried many email marketing programs, and boy are they confusing and expensive.  Aweber definitely is far superior and way less expensive!  I highly recommend it!  ~ Babs
